Starting Your Paddle Boarding Journey:

Paddle boarding has swiftly become one of the most popular water sports worldwide and we love being a part of it!

Our founder Kate tells us why she loves paddle boarding.. 'Paddle boarding is the perfect mix of tranquility and adventure, it offers an immersive experience in nature and the paddle boarding community is a great way to meet new people'.

If you're considering dipping your toes into the world of paddle boarding, let us navigate you through the essentials to kick-start your journey.

Why Paddle Boarding?

1. Mind-Body Balance:

Paddle boarding isn't just about gliding across the water; it's a holistic activity that engages your entire body. From improving core strength to enhancing balance and coordination, paddle boarding offers a full-body workout while simultaneously calming the mind.

2. Connection with Nature:

Picture yourself gracefully paddling along the glistening surface of a tranquil lake or navigating through winding rivers flanked by lush greenery. Paddle boarding allows you to immerse yourself in nature, fostering a deep sense of connection and appreciation for the great outdoors.

3. Versatility:

Whether you're seeking a leisurely activity for a sunny afternoon or an adrenaline-filled adventure, paddle boarding caters to all preferences. From serene calm paddling to thrilling ocean waves, there's a paddle boarding experience suited for every mood and skill level.

Essential Equipment

1. Paddle Board:

The most important part of your paddle boarding adventure is selecting the right board. For beginners, opt for wider, more stable board with a length of around 10-11 feet. Sunsup paddle boards are 33inches wide making them an ideal beginners board. Our paddle boards are popular for their light weight at only 9kg, as well as their portability and ease of storage, making them ideal for newcomers.

2. Paddle:

Your paddle is your propulsion, so choose one that's lightweight and adjustable to your height. A general rule of thumb for sizing: stand the paddle upright next to you, and the handle should reach your wrist when you raise your arm overhead. Sunsup paddles are half carbon, which means they're much lighter than a full aluminium paddle.

3. Leash:

A leash tethers you to your board, preventing it from drifting away in case of falls or sudden currents. Choose a leash length appropriate for the type of paddling you'll be doing, ensuring it's comfortable and secure. Sunsup leashes are 7ft 10 inches giving you plenty of length to move but not too much that the leash gets in the way.

4. Fins:

Paddle board fins are your driver. One of the first things to learn when paddle boarding is that if you do not attach any fins to your paddle board, you'll find yourself going in circles! The amount of fins on your board depends on the type of paddle boarding you wish to be doing. We recommend attaching 3 fins to your paddle board. Sunsup paddle boards come with one large fin that sits in the centre and two smaller side fins. This amount of stability is great for beginners, ensuring easy and steady manoeuvrability.

4. Dry Bags:

Keep your essentials dry and secure by stowing them in a waterproof dry bag. Items such as keys, wallets, and snacks can be safely stored, providing peace of mind during your paddle boarding excursion. Check out our collections of patterned dry bags here

6. Phone:

Safety first, taking a phone out with you is essential for ensuring that if you get into any difficulty, you can call for help. Don't forget to always go with someone or tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

7. Camera

Capture unforgettable moments on the water by bringing along a waterproof camera or securing your phone in a waterproof case. Share your paddle boarding adventures with friends and family, or simply relive the magic of your experience through photos and videos. Don't forget to tag us so we can share your photos on our socials @sunsupboards

8. Water Bottle:

Stay hydrated throughout your paddle boarding journey by bringing along a reusable water bottle. Opt for one of our Reusable Water Bottles and securely attach it to your board under your front bungee straps.

9. Changing Robe:

After a rewarding day on the water, slip into a changing robe to stay warm and comfortable while changing out of your wet gear. Our changing robes will ensure you warm up quickly and provide privacy and convenience, allowing you to transition seamlessly from water to land.
