A Wave of Change: MorMaids Surf Community

On the North coast of Cornwall is a truly inspiring group of women: the MorMaids. This isn't just a surf club, it's a thriving community that is fundamentally changing how women experience the ocean, and we were absolutely thrilled to collaborate with them and dive into their world for an evening.

The MorMaids story began four years ago with Mollie, a passionate, Cornish-born lifeguard who saw a gap in the local surf scene. Like many coastal towns, Cornwall has fantastic options for people wanting to book one-off lessons. But after spending time in New Zealand, Mollie realised there was no established place where local women could regularly meet up, feel comfortable, and simply surf together here in the UK. Mollie wanted to recreate the accessible, low-pressure experience she had grown up with in New Zealand. The mission was clear, to encourage local women to reclaim the waves and build an encouraging space where anyone, from complete beginner, could feel supported taking part.

What started as a small local gathering, now sees a membership of well over 100 women! This kind of community speaks volumes about the need for this kind of genuine, supportive sisterhood. It’s not just about the surfing, it’s about the connection. They've built an environment where confidence flourishes and friendships are made. It’s exactly this kind of empowering, ground-up community building that we love to see and are completely behind.

We were so happy to be included in one of their meet ups this summer. The atmosphere was incredibly positive and uplifting. The group is continually growing, and is set to be an all year round community. It’s rare the North Cornwall weather puts a damper on their fun but if it’s not looking great out there, they’ll still make the most of the time together with a beach picnic, a warm drink, or just a good chat.

We provided all the girls with one of our Sunsup towel robes, a game-changer for surfers.  Our towel robes make the after surf change so much easier, providing not only a towel but a safe space you can change in so you’re not flashing everyone on the beach as you wriggle around in a towel. Spending the evening with the MorMaids was so special. Hearing why they joined in the first place was truly inspiring, often citing a need for confidence, friendship, or simply a safe space to try something new. This is a wonderfully welcoming space for women, completely free of judgement. They really show just how passion and a simple idea can create massive, positive change in a local community.
